Monica’s journey is a powerful example of how opportunity, resilience, and the right support can help young people unlock their potential and build a brighter future.

As the first-born child and the first person in her family to attend university, Monica carried both the hopes and expectations of those around her. Her path was not an easy one. Having lost her father at the age of nine and later her mother, she was raised by her aunt, who became her primary source of support. Despite these challenges, Monica excelled academically, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Land Economy as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar and completing her national service in 2024.

Like many graduates, however, Monica soon encountered a difficult reality. After completing her national service, she found herself unemployed and living with her aunt in Kumasi. The transition from education to employment proved more challenging than she had anticipated. Beyond the uncertainty of job searching, Monica struggled with low self-confidence and timidity, often finding it difficult to engage in conversations or express herself freely.

Everything changed when she heard about the Get Into Employment training programme, a King’s Trust International-funded initiative implemented by YOTA to equip young people with the skills, confidence, and practical experience needed to access decent employment in the hospitality sector.

Although initially sceptical about the opportunity, Monica decided to take a chance and apply. Her decision would become a turning point in her life.

Through the programme, Monica participated in a comprehensive week-long training that focused on critical workplace skills such as communication, time management, planning, professionalism, and customer service. She also gained valuable insights into the hospitality industry, learning the importance of guest satisfaction, emotional intelligence, and maintaining professionalism in challenging situations.

Following the training, Monica undertook a one-month internship at Camp Martin Hotel. The experience allowed her to put her newly acquired skills into practice and build confidence in a professional environment. Her dedication, professionalism, and willingness to learn quickly distinguished her, leading to a permanent position as a receptionist at the same hotel.

Today, Monica is a hospitality professional with a stable source of income and a renewed sense of purpose. Her employment has enabled her to become financially independent, meet her personal needs, and build savings towards her long-term goal of pursuing a Master’s degree. Additional income from guest tips has further strengthened her financial position and accelerated her savings.

Beyond the financial benefits, Monica has experienced a profound personal transformation. The timid graduate who once struggled to engage with others has become a confident professional who interacts daily with guests from diverse backgrounds. Her communication skills have improved significantly, and she now approaches her work with confidence, professionalism, and a strong sense of responsibility.

The change has not gone unnoticed. Within her community, Monica has earned the respect of neighbours and peers who now see her as a focused and hardworking young woman pursuing her goals with determination. Her daily commitment to work and personal growth has become an inspiration to those around her.

Looking ahead, Monica remains ambitious. She is committed to saving for further education and believes that continuous learning will help her reach even greater heights in her career. She also encourages other young people to take advantage of opportunities that come their way, reminding them that self-reliance begins with taking the first step.

Monica’s story demonstrates the transformative impact of investing in young people. Through the Get Into Employment project, she gained more than a job. She gained confidence, independence, professional skills, and a renewed belief in what is possible. Her journey stands as a testament to the power of opportunity to transform lives and create pathways to lasting success.
