Two years ago, in a bustling corner of Accra, Skills Hub by YOTA opened its doors and began reshaping the future of African youth. As we celebrate this milestone, we’re not just marking time – we’re celebrating thousands of success stories.
Launched on May 27, 2021, when the world was still grappling with the uncertainty of COVID-19, the Skills Hub by YOTA emerged as a beacon of hope. Born from the Pathways for Sustainable Employment for Women and Youths Project, this creative space has defied the odds, proving that even in the most challenging times, the spirit of African youth cannot be dampened. Located in the heart of Accra, the hub has become a thriving community for aspiring entrepreneurs, job seekers, and those looking to enhance their skills for the 21st-century workforce.
In just two years, Skills Hub has achieved remarkable milestones. Besides making significant strides in supporting young entrepreneurs by providing affordable, modern office, meeting and event spaces, the hub has successfully organized over 10 editions of its monthly “The Skills Hub Chat,” bringing in seasoned professionals to discuss crucial topics such as personal development, career growth, and entrepreneurship. These events have provided invaluable networking opportunities, connecting youth with mentors and industry leaders they might not have otherwise met.
The hub’s Job Search Clinic has been a game-changer for many young job seekers. Dede Saki, a participant, shared her experience: “The Job Search Clinic was practical, down to earth and participants were fully immersed in the experience. Through the Clinic, I got 2 job offers as a result of revamping my CV and the essential interview skills I picked up. Interviewing & CV writing are now enjoyable experiences.” This success story is just one of many, highlighting the tangible impact of Skills Hub’s programs.
The hub’s collaboration with Funzi in launching the 100learningchallenge, an online self-paced study module, has been instrumental in expanding the hub’s reach. This initiative offered learners courses in personal development, financial literacy, and more, providing valuable resources for self-improvement and skill-building.
Eric Saforo, the Skills & Innovation Lead, reflected on this two-year milestone; “The Skills Hub by YOTA has grown into a vibrant ecosystem for young entrepreneurs to thrive. Our commitment to accessibility and affordability has created a serene space for ideas to flourish. From our impactful Skills Hub Chat, driving startups to new heights, to our shared workspaces that have become homes away from home for many, we’ve witnessed remarkable growth.”
He expressed; “I am immensely proud of our dedicated team whose exceptional customer service has been the cornerstone of our success. As we celebrate this milestone, we are excited about the future, filled with even more opportunities and initiatives to empower the next generation of youth.”
As it embarks on its third year, the Skills Hub by YOTA is poised to expand its impact even further. With a renewed focus on its special services and trainings in Soft Skills, Curriculum Development, Digital Skills, Mentoring and Coaching, Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurship, Job Search Skills, Policy Advocacy and Engagement, and Youth Sector Development among others, the hub is set to continue its mission of fostering a new generation of skilled, confident, and successful African youth.
